Nitrous oxide, a colorless, sweet gas, is an oxidant. In certain conditions, it supports combustion but is stable at room temperature with slight anesthesia. Its anesthetic effect discovered by the British chemist Humphrey David in 1799. The gas was used in early anesthesia for dental surgery and is currently used in surgery and dentistry.
