Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen, also known as heavy hydrogen. Deuterium gas is a colorless, odorless and flammable gas at room temperature, with an abundance of 0.015% on earth. It has very little content in ordinary hydrogen, and mostly exists in seawater and ordinary water in the form of heavy water D2O, deuterium oxide.
D2 Specialty Gas refers to a specialized form of deuterium gas (D2) that is produced and purified to meet specific quality and purity standards for various industrial and scientific applications. Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen with an additional neutron in its nucleus, making it heavier than regular hydrogen. D2 Specialty Gas is utilized in a range of applications including nuclear research, isotope labeling in chemistry and biology, neutron moderation in nuclear reactors, and as a tracer gas in leak detection. It is supplied in cylinders or other containers, and its properties and composition are carefully controlled to ensure consistency and reliability in its use.
Molecular weight: about 4.028 g/mol (compared to about 2.016 g/mol for normal H₂).
Appearance and odor: colorless, odorless gas.
Melting and boiling points: D₂ has a melting point of about 18.7 K (-254.4°C) and a boiling point of about 23.7 K (-249.5°C).
Stability: Chemical properties are similar to those of normal hydrogen, but the reaction rate is slower.
Although D₂ gas is non-toxic, it is much lighter than air, so it may pose a risk of asphyxiation if leaked in an enclosed space.
High-purity D₂ gas is usually stored in high-pressure cylinders and needs to be transported and stored according to appropriate safety guidelines.
D2 Specialty Gas is used in nuclear research facilities for experiments involving neutron scattering, neutron moderation, and isotope production.
In chemistry and biology, D2 Specialty Gas is employed for isotope labeling studies, where deuterium atoms are substituted for hydrogen atoms to track molecular transformations and metabolic pathways.
D2 Specialty Gas is utilized as a tracer gas in leak detection applications, particularly in the testing of pipelines, storage tanks, and industrial equipment for gas leaks.
